Neighborhood Listening Sessions

LET ME HEAR FROM YOU!

I will be holding a dozen Neighborhood Listening Sessions throughout District 14 in October and November.  My goal is to hear what's going on in your neighborhood, what your priorities are for our city, and what you would like to see accomplished over the next couple of years -- for your neighborhood, our district, and our city.  I will also be looking for folks interested in serving on city boards and commissions.  (See left side panel for dates, locations, and neighborhoods.)

Please forward the dates and locations for the Neighborhood Listening Sessions to your friends and neighbors.  The more folks that attend, the better!

Neighborhood Stabilization Overlay

On September 28, the City Council heard public testimony on the proposed Neighborhood Stabilization Overlay.  The overlay is intended to provide neighborhoods with a tool to have some say in the future development of their area by addressing height, setback, and garage placement for new homes.  Only those neighborhoods applying for the overlay, and getting approval from the City Council, would have an overlay.

The Wednesday meeting allowed the City Council to hear what YOU have to say about changes happening in your neighborhood.  In one month, the Council intends to have a proposal to vote on.

I am very supportive of the overlay zoning tool.  District 14 sees more than a quarter of all teardowns in our city, so we are disproportionately affected by the teardown problem.  Residents tell me time and time again that they are tired of losing the unique character of their neighborhood to overly massive, suburban architecture. I firmly believe our neighborhood residents, who invest not only their money but their lives in their neighborhood, should have a say in their community's future development.

New Recycling Program

In October, the City will roll out the first phase of its new recycling program, "Too Good to Throw Away."  As of October 1, 2005, households will be able to recycle more items in blue or clear plastic bags, and there’s no need to separate.  Just put everything into the same bag and place it out with your garbage on your recycling day. Recycling is picked up once a week.  To find your recycling day, go to http://maps.dallascityhall.com/, enter your address, and look under "Sanitation Information" on the right hand side.  Trash will continue to be picked up twice a week.

Recycle these items:

  • Glass (all colors)
  • Plastics #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #7
  • Paper:  newspapers, magazines, junk mail, telephone books, white or colored office-type paper, milk cartons, drink boxes, catalogs, chipboard, and corrugated cardboard
  • Steel, tin, aerosol and aluminum cans

Free blue bags are available at Dallas recreation centers and libraries beginning in September 2005. For more information call (214) 670-4475. Free bags subject to availability.

The second phase of the recycling program will begin in October 2006, when roll-carts will be provided to residents (who may choose to use the carts or tag their recycling bags).  Recycling will be picked up twice a month and garbage will continue to be picked up twice a week.
