HOW TO GET SIGN TOPPERS Many residents ask me how they can get sign toppers for their neighborhood. Sign toppers are a great way to show neighborhood
pride, and can either be attached to the top of street sign poles or lamp
posts.
Because street topper signs are not related to public safety or mobility, the City of Dallas is not required to install or maintain this type of signage. The City does not currently have funding available to provide sign toppers but will allow sign topper projects to be privately funded. Below is a road map on how to get sign toppers for your neighborhood:
An individual, representing a Neighborhood Association, may submit a
sign topper design and list of proposed sign locations to the Department
of Public Works and Transportation for approval. Approvals are required
to insure that signs do not conflict with federally mandated sign
standards or impede public safety. 2. Location map - to identify where these signs will be installed. Signs shall be installed only at locations with existing street name signs. Sign toppers are placed on existing poles (2 signs per pole, back to back). Sign toppers are not allowed on traffic signals or flashers. 3. Sign direction – to identify the street for which the installed sign toppers will be paralleled to. 4. Sign
pole type – to identify the type of existing pole the sign will be
mounted on. Typically there are three types of poles: 2. Sign Fabrication – The Association has the choice or paying a private company or the City to fabricate the sign (apply the sign color materials and text). If special colors are required, a private company must be used. When the M Streets had signs created, they used Diamond Signs (972-554-6781), and each double-sided sign cost around $28, Have extra signs made for replacements due to damage. To have only a few made is very expensive due to the setup charge. 3. Sign
Installation Costs – The association must pay the City to install
sign topper signs. Only city staff is permitted to install sign topper
signs on public streets.
