KATY TRAIL EAST

The Katy Trail is one of Dallas' most popular hike and bike trails.  Stretching from the American Airlines Center to Airline Road, the trail runs along the old Missouri/Kansas/Texas ("MKT") rail lines, donated to the city in 1993.

The Katy Trail will expand in the next three years, crossing Central Expressway and connecting to White Rock Lake.

SCHEDULE
There are three segments to the extension of the Katy Trail.  The segment connecting the end of the current trail to Central Expressway at McCommas, then to the northern part of Glencoe Park, and the segment from Worcola all the way to White Rock Lake are estimated to be completed by July 2008.  These are marked in blue on the map below.  The current schedule:

DATE PROCESS
March 2007 Complete design
July 2007 Begin construction
July 2008 Finish construction

The third segment is the middle part of the trail, running from Glencoe Park, behind Hotel Palomar, on a pedestrian bridge across Mockingbird, to Worcola.  Because of the bridge element, this is most challenging part of the trail to design and implement, and that's one reason it's taking longer than the other two segments.  This segment's marked in red on the map below.  The current schedule:

DATE PROCESS
January 2007 Begin design from Glencoe Park to Worcola (including Mockingbird bridge)
June 2008 Complete design
October 2008 Begin construction
August 2009 Finish construction
