Good News — Crime Hasn’t Been This Low in Dallas Since the 1960s! Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 at 3:49 PM
We’ve got a lot of work to do to make Dallas a safer city, but I was really pleased by the report I received this week on crime reduction for 2008. Basically, Dallas’ crime rate is lower than it’s been since the 1960s, and the total NUMBER of murders — not just per capita — is also the lowest it’s been since that tie-dyed era.
15% Reduction in Murders
170 murders is the lowest NUMBER of murders since 1967
Lowest per capita murder rate since 1966 (.136 per 1000 residents)
14% Reduction in Violent Crime
7th consecutive year of violent crime reduction. We had 6356 FEWER violent crimes in 2008 than in 2001 (that’s a 36% reduction!)
Lowest per capita violent crime rate since 1976 (9.12 per 1000 residents)
10% Reduction in Total Crime
5th straight year of total crime rate reduction. We had 27,586 fewer crimes in 2008 than in 2003
Lowest per capita crime rate since 1968! (69.6 per 1000 residents)
